Amazon Sword Care Guide | Easy Aquarium Plant For Beginners!
Amazon Sword (Echinodorus bleheri) is one of the most popular aquarium plants for both beginners and experienced aquarists. It’s known for being hardy, adaptable, and easy to grow in a wide range of aquarium conditions. In this video, I share my experience keeping Amazon Sword, how to grow it successfully in a planted aquarium, and why it’s such a great plant for low-tech tanks.
Amazon Sword is a large rosette plant that grows from a central crown and produces long, flowing leaves. Because of its size, it works best in medium to large aquariums where it has room to spread out. In the right conditions it can grow anywhere from 30–70 cm (12–28 inches) tall, making it an excellent background or centerpiece plant. Its broad green leaves create a lush, natural look while also providing hiding spots for fish, shrimp, and fry.
One of the reasons Amazon Sword is so beginner friendly is that it adapts well to many different setups. It grows well in soft or hard water, and it tolerates a wide pH range from around 5.0 to 9.0. The ideal temperature range is about 22–28 °C (72–82 °F), although it can tolerate slightly cooler water for short periods.
Lighting requirements are flexible as well. Older care guides often recommend moderate to high lighting, but modern aquarium LEDs mean even a basic light is usually enough. In low light the plant grows more slowly, which can actually be beneficial for low-maintenance tanks. With moderate or stronger lighting, growth speeds up and the leaves tend to become larger.
Another advantage of Amazon Sword is that it does not require CO₂ injection. It grows perfectly well using the natural CO₂ produced in the aquarium by fish, plants, and microorganisms. This makes it an ideal plant for low-tech aquariums where you want healthy plant growth without adding extra equipment.
Amazon Sword grows best in nutrient-rich substrates such as aquasoil or dirt capped with sand or gravel. These substrates help support faster growth, especially under stronger lighting. However, the plant can also absorb nutrients directly from the water column, so it can still grow well even without a heavily fertilized substrate.
In my own tanks, I usually rely on a nutrient-rich substrate and fish waste as natural fertilizer. This simple approach has always been enough to keep Amazon Sword healthy without needing liquid fertilizers.
Planting Amazon Sword is straightforward. Remove the plant from its pot, carefully remove the rock wool from the roots, and check whether there are multiple plants in the pot that can be separated. Trimming the roots back slightly can make planting easier. When placing it into the substrate, make sure the crown (where the leaves grow from) stays above the substrate so the plant doesn’t rot.
As the plant grows, older leaves can be trimmed to make space for new ones. Because the leaves can become large, they may shade smaller plants beneath them, so occasional pruning helps maintain balance in the aquascape.
Overall, Amazon Sword is one of the easiest and most rewarding aquarium plants you can grow. It’s hardy, adaptable, and doesn’t require CO₂ or complex fertilization. Its large, flowing leaves make it a beautiful focal point in planted aquariums while also providing shelter for fish and shrimp.
If you have a medium or large aquarium and want a reliable plant that creates a lush, natural look with minimal effort, Amazon Sword is an excellent choice.
