Betta Fish Diaries - 30 Days Of Care, Food, And Maintenance With My Planted Betta Fish Tank!

In this video, I share a month’s worth of caring for my betta fish, Marmalade, in a new tank setup. Throughout September 2024, I captured daily clips to give you an honest glimpse into what it takes to maintain a planted tank for a betta fish, especially in the early stages of tank cycling. From daily feedings to water changes, plant care, and troubleshooting issues, I show you what it’s really like behind the scenes.

**Day 1:** Marmalade had only been in her tank for about a week, and I lowered the water level to reduce any jumping risks. I checked water parameters more frequently than usual, as I noticed a small ammonia spike likely caused by melting Anubias plants that struggled with the tank’s cycling process. I moved Marmalade temporarily to a holding tub, matched the water temperature, and did a large water change to lower ammonia. I removed melting plant leaves and replanted any uprooted Monte Carlo carpeting plants that Marmalade’s digging had disturbed. To keep her environment interesting, I added a floating ring with water lettuce, which quickly became her feeding spot.

**Days 2-7:** I introduced her to different foods like frozen daphnia and Fluval Bug Bites pellets. I noticed she was a bit unsure about new foods initially, but she quickly became curious. Her interactions with the tank’s shrimp were peaceful, showing she was getting comfortable with her tank mates. I also checked the new nano heater, which was doing a great job maintaining the water temperature.

**Days 8-14:** The ammonia levels stabilized, and I resumed feeding Marmalade in different parts of the tank to encourage her to explore. I added liquid fertilizer to support the plants, as bettas have a low bioload and don’t provide enough nutrients for a densely planted tank. Some Anubias plants began to show fresh growth, so I decided to let them recover naturally. I managed to capture her interacting with one of the shrimp, proving she was settling in well.

**Days 15-20:** I continued feeding and maintaining the tank, making sure to check water parameters regularly. The duckweed started to take over the surface, which I removed with a comb. I noticed the Limnophila sessiliflora was turning brown due to a lack of nitrate, so I increased the frequency of liquid fertilizer dosing to better support the plants.

**Days 21-30:** I experimented with Bug Bites Bottom Feeder formula, but it sank too quickly, and the shrimp ended up eating most of it. I replaced the Bacopa caroliniana with Staurogyne repens and removed most of the duckweed, planning to switch to salvinia next month. On Day 25, I experienced a mild bacterial bloom due to not rinsing off the gel on new plants thoroughly, but it cleared up quickly.

Throughout this month, I faced common new tank challenges, from ammonia spikes to plant melt, along with adjusting my routines to keep Marmalade’s environment interesting and healthy. This video captures everything—from my feeding strategies and daily water tests to how I manage plant growth in a low-tech setup. As the tank continues to establish itself, I’m excited to see how the plants grow in and how Marmalade settles into her home.
