GYLFIE THE BARN OWL
Gylfie is the resident female barn owl here at Fotherdale. She laid her first egg in Elm Stump on Tuesday, May 4th, at 20:50.
HOW DO BARN OWLS LAY
Laying is quite strenuous and takes a lot of effort. It took Gylfie four days to produce this first egg. After three days of watching her straining on the nest cams, I got a little worried that she could be egg bound, so it was a huge relief when she stood up to reveal this beautiful white egg on the fourth day.
WHEN DO BARN OWLS LAY
By going through last year's footage of Gylfie inside the nest we have a good idea of what to expect. It's worth noting that she is a month later than last year. This could be because of the cold. This April has been unseasonably cold and we have had a unprecedented number of night frosts.
HOW OFTEN DO BARN OWLS LAY?
Barn owls lay every two to three days. Last year Gylfie laid three eggs with a 71.5 hour time span between each egg. She was fairly regimented about this so I am expecting the same time span this time.
HOW LONG IS BARN OWL INCUBATION
Barn owls incubate their eggs from the moment they are laid and will incubate for 32 days. Last year only one egg hatched, and that was Solo, and although Gylfie was in the nest incubating for a total of 37 days, I suspect Solo hatched from the last egg to be laid.
BROODING
Only the female broods the eggs and subsequent chicks. The male's job is to supply food. Barn owls are not particularly clean inside the nest and don't leave the nest to defecate. This is something you never see a tawny owl do.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
Over the next 32 days we will see Gylfie getting up every now and then to stretch and we can watch her mate Finn bring her food. It will be interesting to see how he develops in his new role. As a relatively young male he has been a little bemused by the process and at times has refused to give his food gifts to Gylfie!
THE CHICKS
When the chicks hatch they are tiny, but they grow fast.
