Baby Tawny Owls Hatch Faster Than Expected 🦉🐣🐣🐥

Tawny owl chicks normally hatch out every 2/3 days and that's what we expected of Bonnie's chicks. But this week all four tawny owl chicks hatched within the space of just three days - three of them cracking out of their shells in less than 24 hours of one another!

TAWNY OWL EGGS
This is very unusual since the tawny owl eggs were laid at the normal pace, one every 2/3 days.

HATCHING
According to the text books, tawny owls normally hatch about a month after they were laid. We were therefore expecting Bonnie's chicks to hatch from April 4th. However the first chick didn't hatch until the 9th, five days later. It was followed by the second just 16 hours later, then a 3rd only 9 hours after that. The fourth hatched two days later, on the 11th - a more usual gap for tawny owlets.

TAWNY OWL PARENTS
Tawny owl mothers are very protective and despite the cameras hidden inside their nest it is hard to see if a chick has hatched and so the exact hatching times are not always known. However, the first time Bonnie revealed her first two chicks their feathers were still wet and had therefore only just hatched.

MALE TAWNY OWL
The male tawny owl, Ozzy, has been very attentive since the chicks hatched and has provided quite a cache of rats for his new family to eat. Watch as these tiny chicks take their first meals.
