Two Kestrel Pairs: One Calm, One Clashing

There are two kestrel couples here, each sitting on eggs. But the differences in the way they share care of their eggs is stark.

KESTREL NEST CAMERA
My cameras mean I am privy to the secret lives of individual birds and as the two kestrels in nest boxes here both begin incubating their eggs, the differences between their relationships become clear.

MR & MRS KES
This kestrel pair are an old couple and have been together a long time. Watch how seamlessly they swap turns to brood their clutch of six eggs in my Ash Stump nest box at my home, Fotherdale Farm.

MEANWHILE AT ASH WOOD
In comparison there is a lot of screeching over whose turn it is to do what in the Ash Wood kestrel nest. Athena,, the female kestrel, squawks at her mate Apollo the moment she arrives to take her turn on the clutch.

CONFUSED KESTREL
Poor Apollo, who is busy incubating their three eggs, has no idea what to do with himself and literally begins climbing the walls of this kestrel nest box, named Ash Hollow, in an attempt to break free.

KESTREL EGG
Interestingly, not long after this episode, Athena lays her fourth egg. Perhaps she was trying to tell her kestrel partner to get out the way as she needed to lay. She certainly seemed to be very urgent.

MALE KESTREL DUTIES
Apollo tries to do his best and returns to the nest as quickly as possible with a meal, which Athena snatches from him. Even still, she seems to have a lot to shriek about! There seems to be no love loss between this pair.

I am a British wildlife artist based in Thixendale, North Yorkshire, UK. I build ideal habitats to encourage wildlife into my garden and use nest cams to study their behaviour. These studies inform my paintings. I share the best of my video research on this channel for free. If you would like to support my work please consider a small donation here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=A52ZHAMJZC3J4

Or of course you may like to purchase my artwork which you will find on my website: https://www.robertefuller.com. Many of the paintings are portraits of the creatures you watch here!
