Wildlife in Spring | My Yorkshire Year

It's springtime here on the Yorkshire Wolds and all the animals are gearing up to create new life. Watch this to see wrens, goldfinch, and long-tailed tits build their nests, whilst frogs spawn and stoats get ready for their new kits.

SPRING
The weather is warmer and the race is now on to raise new life. Everywhere the animals are busy preparing for the season.

WRENS & GOLDFINCHES
The birds I've fed all winter are now making nests, including a long-tailed tit, weaving an intricate structure out of spiders webs and feathers, and a goldfinch, wrapping sheep's wool into its nest for a soft bedding for its eggs.

ROBIN CHICKS
But the robins have a head start. They are early nesters and are already raising a brood of noise, yellow-beaked chicks.

COMMON FROGS
And their busy work is done to the tune of frogs serenading in the nearby pond as the water fills with their spawn. Soon tadpoles will swarm the water.

STOATS (SHORT-TAILED WEASELS)
And an expectant stoat mum is preparing for the arrival of her babies. Watch Hazel drag a leveret twice her size to stash it in her nest ready for her confinement.

OWL & KESTRELS
The birds of prey are also busy. The owls are already raising chicks and the kestrels have healthy heaps of eggs.

I can't wait now to watch these young lives to grow and become independent.
