From the frogs spawning in spring, to stoats turning white for winter, the Yorkshire Wolds teams with wildlife all year round. Join me as I follow some of the most secretive animals as they face the challenges of each season.

Spring

With the clamour of birdsong and spawning frogs, springtime can feel like the noisiest and busiest time of year. Watch wrens, goldfinch, and long-tailed tits build their nests, see owls and kestrels begin laying their eggs and see stoats get ready for their new kits as new growth and plants blossom all around them.

Summer

By summer the stoat kits are exploring the garden as the young owls and kestrels fledge in the skies above them. Meanwhile further afield badger cubs tumble through the long grasses and butterflies and bees buzz lazily through the wildflower meadows.

Autumn

As the leaves turn from green to gold, autumn begins to take hold here on the Yorkshire Wolds and the wildlife is getting ready for the coming winter. As the nights grow cooler the stoats curl up amidst the fallen leaves and squirrels hastily forage.

Meanwhile badgers draw straw bedding down into their underground chambers ready for the winter ahead and hedgehogs get ready to hibernate.

Winter

Winters can be harsh here in Yorkshire but already the kestrels are pairing up ready for the coming spring and, my favourite of all, the stoats turn white to camouflage with the snows.
