Tawny Owl Chicks Can't Wait to See The World🦉🌎 | Bonnie & Ozzy | Robert E Fuller

Bonnie the tawny owl's chicks can't wait to explore the world. Watch this one climb right up to the nest entrance and hang on to the edge with its beak. It won't be long before it fledges!

*ABOUT THIS FILM*

Tawny owls Bonnie & Ozzy

This tawny owl pair have four healthy chicks this year. The owlets hatched in April and are now ready to fledge. Keep watching my livestream to see them as they begin to explore the world outside!

Tawny owl chicks

Tawny owl chicks are renowned for being very adventurous and often leave the nest well before they can actually fly. Once they are out, they don't return and tend to spend their days in the surrounding tree canopy hopping from branch to branch. This is known as 'branching' and the parent birds continue to feed them here.

Accidents

Sometimes tawny owl chicks leave the nest before they are quite ready. This can lead to accidents. But tawny owls are good at climbing - as you can see here! - and often scramble back up using their claws and beaks.

A safe owl box

For this reason, I designed this nest box with a deep drop from the entrance to the nest. So far these steep sides have kept the chicks safe, but this one looks so determined it won't be long before it's out. Ash Wood

This tawny owl family live in a nest box named Ash Tree in Ash Wood, a habitat I developed especially for wildlife. Read more about it here: https://www.robertefuller.com/diary/the-animals-of-ash-wood/

Bonnie's story

This is Bonnie and Ozzy's second breeding season here. Last year they raised two adorable chicks, Bramble & Sage, after losing their first clutch of eggs.
