2022-2023 KLR650 review︱Cross Training Adventure

http://crosstrainingenduro.com http://tractionerag.com
Our review of the 2022 and 2023 Kawasaki KLR650 models. In 2022 the Kawasaki KLR650 had a huge number of changes. The critical updates were fuel injection and automatic braking systems (ABS) so they KL650 could pass safety and emission laws in various countries. It's why you can still buy a KLR650 in many countries where the DR650 and XR650L are no longer available. There were lots of other changes. Check out this list for our 2022 Kawasaki KLR650 review. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. Unfortunately Kawasaki did not make the changes most KLR650 owners were hoping for. Lighter weight? No, it's even heavier and now weighs the same as some twin cylinder adventure motorbikes. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. Nothing has changed so this is also a 2023 Kawasaki KLR650 review. Did they fix the never ending 'doohickey' problem which has caused excessive engine wear and even seizures in the past for the 2023 Kawasaki KLR650? No. A sixth gear? No. Cartridge forks? No, the same rod forks since 1986. We gave Kawasaki a hard time about this in a previous video. But to be fair, we've chatted with owners of the new model and looked at a pile of owner reports to form a long-term review. The 2023 Kawasaki KLR650 engine. Many hoped for more power with the fuel-injected 2022 KLR650. Dyno charts show it's around the same as the previous models and the carbureted DR650 and XR650L. Fuel economy for the 2022 Kawasaki KLR650 should be better but the only figures we could find suggested 43mpg or 5.5L/100km - not much different to carb models. Suspension? Kawasaki said there were new suspension settings but we suspect it just has stiffer springs to cope with the extra weight. The general consensus is the suspension is adequate for everyday riding. But heavy luggage or aggressive off-road riding? Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. You will want suspension upgrades. The footpegs are now rubber mounted. This may be good if you always sit due to less vibrations. But if you stand on the footpegs they flex... just like the crappy footpegs on a DR650. A lot of riders hate ABS. Feedback suggests the system works reasonably well but there's no switch to turn it on and off. Those who hate ABS disconnect the rear speed sensor switch and leave it off permanently. A lot of the modifications just seemed to add weight for no real benefit. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. However, the stronger subframe will be good for riders wanting to carry a lot of luggage. Some owners say the revised windscreen is still too small, however it can be raised or lowered now. However the angle can't be changed. One or two owners don't like the angle which they say could be dangerous if your body was pitched forward. Lets focus on the big positives though for the 2023 Kawasaki KLR650. We have seen huge price increases with so many motorbike models the past two years. But the KLR650 has kept its bargain price tag despite all the changes. The KLR650 is often criticised because it is not good in rougher terrain. But of course it's designed for doing lot highway miles and easy dirt roads with a minimum of fuss. Lack of power? You are looking at the wrong motorbike. My derestricted DR650 only has a few more horsepower than the KLR650 and I'm perfectly happy with 40hp. Many experienced riders are. And if you like bling, Kawasaki has these variants which still come in at a budget price. What's not to like? This third generation KLR650 has plenty of fans, just like the earlier generations. And most of the criticism comes from riders who are expecting it to perform like a big dirt bike... or an adventure motorbike that costs twice as much. Have you owned or ridden the third generation KLR650? Let us know what you think in the comments section. So most of our adventure riding vids will feature the much loved bush pig, the Suzuki DR650. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within. What else? Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews. Manufacturers make some really bad mistakes. and there is a lot of dodgy crap being sold out there. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the buggers honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure.
