Police investigating possible murder suicide of mum and toddler in sydney home

A mother and her 17-month-old daughter are dead after a suspected murder-suicide at a home in Sydney’s south west.

A family member returned to the Fitzroy Street home in Campsie just after 2.30pm to find the 29-year-old woman dead and the young child in cardiac arrest.

The child was rushed to St George Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
"Early investigations indicate both have died as a result of asphyxiation," a NSW Police spokesman said.

"We are satisfied the deceased child is in fact the daughter of the 29-year-old female."

Several distraught family members remained at the scene as forensic officers examined the home.
"We're speaking with family and friends," Superintendent Michael McLean said.

The girl's father arrived at the scene this afternoon and was being supported by family members.

The spokesman said responding officers had travelled with the child to hospital and were extremely distressed.

"They’re clearly devastated and traumatised with what has occurred," he said.
The officers involved have been offered counselling.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
