US navy veteran saves woman from campervan blaze

An American navy veteran has risked his life for a complete stranger when a campervan went up in flames with a woman trapped inside.

Chris Chmielnicki was at a nearby store in Pennsylvania with his fiancé when the inferno broke out, the Pocono Records reports.

Mr Chmielnicki said he ran to the vehicle and found an elderly man who said his girlfriend was still inside the van. Mr Chmielnicki then entered the vehicle and crawled through the van blindly feeling for the woman.

“It was so toxic, I went to my knees, and finally I felt her leg, the woman was unconscious,” he told US program Good Morning America.

Mr Chmielnicki carried the woman from the campervan, saving her life.

The pair were taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation poisoning.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
