Bail conditions relaxed for Bill Spedding after Sydney court appearance

A magistrate has told a Sydney court today he was assuming a “presumption of innocence” when he relaxed the bail conditions of alleged child molester, Bill Spedding.

Mr Spedding, who was named as a person of interest in the disappearance of toddler William Tyrrell, today argued in Campbelltown Local Court that the 60km round trip he made daily from his Bonny Hills home to report to police in Port Macquarie was excessive.

The magistrate said the travelling would put a strain on any community member’s life.

Mr Spedding will now have to make the trip three times a week – on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The court was told Mr Spedding had completed the daily reports “religiously”, and had travelled six hours to appear in court today in person, despite not being required to do so.

His wife was beside him in court and did not comment to waiting media after the hearing.

Mr Spedding is accused of abusing two girls under the age of seven in Sydney's south west in the 1980s.

He has denied any involvement in the disappearance of William Tyrrell.
