New Zealand divers find hundreds of gold coins during harbour clean-up
Divers cleaning up the waters near a wharf in Wellington harbour over the weekend have come across sunken treasure, hauling up more than 800 gold coins.
The five-member 99 Dive Crew Team were only expecting to find discarded trolleys and other rubbish on the seabed at Taranaki Wharf and were shocked when they came across the stash of coins, The Dominion Post reports.
"[Of] the coins we found, some are apparently of value – amazing!" dive organiser Rob Wilson said.
The coins are yet to be valued but one team member reportedly said that any money raised from selling the loot would go towards covering the cost of the clean-up operation with the divers currently footing the bill themselves.
As well as gold coins the team also removed a lot more mundane items from the sea.
The divers collected 577 cans, 116 glass bottles, a clothes iron, clothing, cash cards, cow bones and a bong.
