the original uk version of the office written by and starring Ricky Gervais was first aired in 2001 and finished in 2003, only running for 14 episodes.
two years later the us version of the office first aired starring Steve Carrell and Rain Wilson. Although it initially failed to connect with American audiences the show would eventually become a huge success and would run for 201 episodes making it the most successful British to American adaptation of all time.

The characters of David Brent and Michael Scott would both become hugely popular with audiences in both the uk and us as the main protagonist of their respective shows.
