Although the character of the Joker has been portrayed in cinema before, most notably by Jack Nicholson in 1989’s Batman movie and Heath Ledger in 2008’s The Dark night, this performance by Joaquin Phoenix is a character study of Arthur Fleck as he slowly transforms into the Joker.
