If you look into it at all, it will leave you scratching your head to how this psychopath convinced people to carry out his orders and obey him like a servant. What techniques did he use to capture attention, and where did he learn it from?

Manson goes to jail and discovers a Dale Carnegie course. This was just what Manson was looking for and for the first time in his life, Manson became an outstanding pupil. Manson studied every detail of the course, and wrote notes of how he could better communicate and manipulate those around him.
Once he got out, he immediately put his Carnegie training to work, in pimping. He smiled more, he remembered the girls' names and used them a lot, he acted interested in conversation with girls, and he made them feel more important. He made them feel like they were part of his plan to build up his pimping business. Most potential prostitutes had terrible self-images, so this worked quite well for Manson.

Fast forward a few years and Manson gets caught again and returns to jail. But again, he looks to self help and reflection as a guide for his future. This new plan, however, is going to require a lot more manipulation.
He wants to be a famous musician and has three steps to get there.

1. Get out of jail as quickly as possible
2. Find people that he could manipulate. People he could take money from, build connections through, and basically force to do whatever he said.
3. Find a music producer and become famous

He remembers what Carnegie said about arguments: the best way to win them is to avoid them. He never argues so he can leave prison quicker.
Once out, he uses Carnegie and Scientology to attract hippies in Haight-Ashbury. He uses them to get money, cars, favors, etc. The way he spoke, his rhythm, his dramatized speaking drew people in and made them innately interested.

To further control people, he used the manipulation trick of letting the other person feel that it was their idea.
Modern day research points out how tightly we cling to things that we consider ours. The feeling of ownership skews our perception of value, sometimes by a factor of 2 times. So by encouraging his followers to come to conclusions that he desired on their own, Manson was abusing one of the most powerful cognitive glitches of the human mind. He slowly converted each one of his followers to his worldview, and built a following dedicated to carrying out his plan. After all, they believed these conclusions were their own, so they naturally followed them all the more resolutely, even if that meant murdering people along the way.
