These Tricks Stop Bad Habits and Start Good Ones

One of my favorite quotes is habits turn actions into attitude and attitudes into lifestyles by John Maxwell. Basically he is saying that habits shape the way our whole life flows, starting from the bottom and moving to the top. To stop bad habits and start good ones, you have to get to the core of what's causing them: your willpower. Remove the will power and you can much more easily break bad habits and create good ones.

So the overall goal is to remove willpower and self control from the equation. Nudge our mindless momentum in the right direction.

This can be something as easy as removing exposure to the temptation. Simple and seemingly obvious right? But like we said common sense is not common action. Remove the ice cream from your sight, remove bookmarks from your browser that distract you, disable notifications that you don’t need, buy smaller plates so you aren’t tempted to eat more since you physically cannot squeeze more on your plate. Remove the exposure as much as possible.
Now sometimes it’s not as easy right? Like what if you wanted to stop watching tv. Well we don’t really want to remove the tv from our wall, that's a little excessive. So here, we can use the 20 second rule. The twenty second rule is the idea that we over complicate things to a simple task, adding twenty seconds to the process. So for watching TV, we could take out the batteries and place them in a cabinet across the room from the couch. Now when we get home, plop down on the couch, grab the remote and press the power button, we immediately realize that there are now many more steps to watching TV and we are discouraged from doing them. Add twenty seconds to your day and gain three hours.

And the obvious flip side answer to developing good habits, is to simplify the process. Want to learn how to play the guitar, don’t put the guitar away in its case, in the closet. Place it out, ready to go in an area you are a lot, maybe right next to the couch. So now there is 5 seconds between you and that guitar, but 20 seconds between you and watching TV. It’s a small difference but such an effective technique.

Another way of reducing the willpower in the moment is when you set second order decisions.
Essentially you decide now what you will be doing later. In that cold state, when you don’t have temptation involved, make the decision that’s right for you.
Now sometimes the idea of removing willpower is impossible. Like let’s say you’re a parent and you want to eat less and lose weight, but you live with teenage boys. Well they’re gonna be eating probably junk food, all the time and you’re supposed to just ignore the constant temptation?

One way to help beat this is to get others involved. Simply tell your whole family or friends what you are trying to do, and you’d appreciate their support. Give them your full authorization to stop you when you fall into temptation.
Still this leaves room for error. The temptation is still there when nobody is around. Some people this won’t be an issue as they can just refrain from entering the kitchen and exposing themselves to temptation, but for those that really struggle with kicking a bad habit, go to the next step, and put something on the line.

Make a deal with someone around you that really incentivizes you to complete a goal.
