Why You Need to Start Every Day With Discomfort

In order to grow, learn, and move forward in your progress towards success, you have to make yourself uncomfortable. An easy way to make sure you more easily take on discomfort, is to introduce it every morning. In whatever way you can, do something that brings you a little discomfort. A little goes a long way in being able to do hard things.

In some way, make yourself uncomfortable first thing in the morning. I would highly encourage exercise of some sort, the more it makes you uncomfortable, the better, but it can be immediately addressing something at work that you have been pushing off, and every time you think of it you get those butterflies in your stomach. yeah that thing. Do that thing.

Now most likely these little bouts of discomfort will not be the main force in encouraging you to grow substantially but they encourage you to grow through other means. Let me explain.

See when we get up in the morning and make ourselves uncomfortable, the feeling after is unmatched and incredibly important. We give ourselves an accomplishment, a success immediately, and our brain responds to that well. If you’ve watched my channel a little, you know we’ve talked about dopamine a lot, and how it fuels your daily actions, well this is another example. Choose your hit of dopamine. You can get it from running 2 miles, and feeling excited that you’ve been productive, or you can get it from immediately getting up and looking at your social media feed. Each one gives your brain dopamine, and each one encourages more of a similar action.

On the other hand, if I get up, ignore the phone, and go get a great session at the gym, I feel accomplished and I’m ready to do more. My brain has understood that I can also get a dopamine boost from completing something that made me uncomfortable. When I get back, and I'm faced with the stress of the rest of the day, and an onslaught of things that make me uncomfortable, I’m in a much better mindset than I would have otherwise been.

That was just from one day. Humans are incredibly habitual, so when you make this a pattern every day, you are able to overcome stressful blockers more frequently.

If you are a stranger to discomfort, that will lead to panic and panic is where we make mistakes. There’s another quote I love that says “A deer's brain tells it to run because things are bad. The deer runs. Sometimes right into traffic”. Which perfectly describes so much of our lives. A great example is approaching and asking out someone you’re interested in. If you are incredibly fearful of that moment, because you are not seasoned in bold social risks, you are bound to panic. You’re on edge, you’re overthinking every little thing, and sometimes it turns out bad. You run into that metaphorical traffic, only this time it's in the form of awkward, cringey conversations. Not claiming that I am the master of this realm either, I’d probably be running into headlights as well. But the more you do it, the less fearful you become, and the less likely you are to say or do the wrong thing.
