Your Life View is Ruining Your Chance of Success

Probably the most backwards thing in life, is the actual way we look at life. We are told that if you work hard, you will be successful, and then we think to ourselves, "well I'll be happy when I'm successful." This is wrong for so many reasons. In this video I talk about why this hampers your chance of success, and I talk about some of the ways to give yourself an advantage to becoming successful.

Most people, out of habit, choose to focus on the negatives. Similarly to my example, studies have found that students accepted into Harvard, quickly forget that they have been given an amazing opportunity to go to Harvard, and instead focus on the stress.

We need to reverse the formula throughout society. Constantly looking out for negatives in the world, undermines creativity, raises stress, and lowers motivation. What’s crazy is that this thought process is found throughout our lives. You were bound to fall into the trap. Most companies and schools teach this completely backwards philosophy. They tell you that if you work harder, you’ll be more successful. And if you’re more successful, you’ll be happier. This is broken for two reasons.

Everytime we achieve success, we change what success means. You get the raise, you look for the next raise. You buy a bigger house, you need a new car. Your kid got a better report card, they need to focus on getting all A’s now. If happiness is on the other side of success, and success continuously moves farther away from you, obviously you never get to happiness.
If you raise your happiness levels in the presence, your brain can now excel in so many ways. When compared to a neutral or negative state, a happy brain increases your intelligence, raises energy levels, boosts productivity, and makes you generally more resilient and less likely to succumb to burnout. When you are happy it turns on the learning centers of your brain. Positivity releases dopamine and serotonin, which not only make us feel good, but also help us organize information, keep that information, and retrieve it faster when we need it.

So we know of the benefits of being happy, but how can we implement this happiness mindset. Well it actually can be achieved quicker than you think. The simplest ways of quickly flipping the equation include:

Practice daily gratitude
Meditate
Find something to look forward to
Exercise
Exercise a signature strength

We’ve already flipped around success and happiness, but what about when you actually run into obstacles, hardship, and full blown failures?

I challenge you to alter your mind to conceive failure as an opportunity for growth. This allows you to experience that exact growth and be more prepared for the next time.
