Albino Elephant, Khanyisa Goes Swimming | A Bull Challenge: Somopane vs Zindoga | Tokwe & Bubi Time

Another Beautiful Day on Earth for Khanyisa & Her Elephant Herd - to celebrate this Earth Day 22 April Enjoy a range of activities at the waterhole on this new day in the wild with the rescued herd and orphans.

Khanyisa is the first to start splashing and swimming - but then again it is much easier for her little frame to quickly plop down in the water and get back up, compared to the much bigger giants aorund her. She washes off all the mud and is soon as pink as a wildflower.

Tokwe is ever the Matriarch, making sure that the elephants are all safe and sound, as she waits on the edges for Bubi to come and join the rest of the herd who are already on the other side of the dam. Bubi is often quite a solitary elephant, much like a bull in many ways, but she does enjoy the company of Fishan and Somopane. It's lovely to see Tokwe keeping her company here as Bubi splashes in the dam, wetting Jabulani and making sure to wet her rear before moving away from the deeper water.

The waterhole is a cherished place for wildlife and vital for all the animals who call the wilderness home, as it provides water to drink, to cool down in, and to enjoy. Pisa goes in deep too, as does Limpopo who lies down slowly.

Somopane interestingly steps in to discipline Zindoga who must have overstepped the line of peace and harmony in the reserve. This is typical bull behaviour and if the bulls were in their own bachelor herd like other older bulls in the wild, the older bulls would also be disciplining the younger bulls, keeping them in line, teaching them to respect the hierarchy and avoid trouble. Somopane likes to avoid conflict but he is not afraid to do what's needed, in a gentle way, to keep the herd's contentment. He challenges Zindoga and zeroes in on him to get him away from the herd and take some time out to the side. Mambo and Zindoga are both known to get quite boisterous and enjoy challenging certain elephants. The bull hierarchy is fascinating and constantly being enforced as the elders ensure the young bulls know who's boss amongst them. Sebakwe is first in dominance currently, followed by Jabulani, Fishan and then Somopane, with Zindoga and Mambo still fighting it out for their positions as they grow older.

Bubi joins little Khanyisa on the other side, with all the elephants close together and enjoying the beauty of their waterhole. We're grateful to be able to provide the rescued herd and orphans with this life in the South African bush, safe and protected by carers throughout the day.
