Khanyisa Drinks Her Milk from Bottles & a Bucket Today! A First for This Baby Elephant 🍼🐘

Khanyisa used to start her day slowly in the orphanage when she still slept in her nursery with Lammie and Nungu. She could eat her sweet potatoes and fruit and drink her bottles in the garden while she waited to join the other elephants to start their day in the bush. Now that she stays full time in the homestead she has her breakfast once the herd are outside the fences, and while the other elephants graze or have any wounds checked up on. This gives the calf less time to eat. To prevent her keeping the herd waiting too long, Adine and Herman are attempting to feed her milk and pellets at the same time — in a bucket, the same way fellow orphan, Timisa used to drink her milk (only because Timisa wouldn’t take a bottle).

It was the first attempt but it went well! Khanyisa learnt as she went and slowly got the hang of it. We will see if this helps her to eat faster so that we don’t obstruct the herd’s routine and time in the wilderness each day. During the day in the bush, Khanyisa only has milk bottles and is better able to drink them all in time while the other elephants forage around her.

Watch as she shows off her fierce appetite, moving from milk to pellets to sweet potatoes and finally trunkfuls of lush grass as she meets up with the herd. Khanyisa even tries to follow Herman back to the orphanage because he has a few more sweet potatoes on hand. You go meisiekind!
