On the Trail with Elephant Bull, Fishan & Albino Calf, Khanyisa! 🐘

Head out on this early morning with the herd as the sun is still rising! Khanyisa is full of energy, running between different elephants and even off in her own direction! The carers and Adine call her back while Fishan and Kumbura wait for the calf too.

Fishan moves remarkably well across the bush, and patiently waits for little Khanyisa as she holds him up - he shows a little less patience for Kumbura as the larger cow slows down in front of him. Fishan is always very careful and nurturing around younger elephants in his herd.

Fishan’s leg is doing well but we know that as the weather gets colder in the mornings with winter moving in, his leg will become stiffer and we potentially cause discomfort for him. We assist him with anti-inflammatory medication to make winters easier for him.

Kumbura follows Khanyisa - moving between the bushes and trees, as the herd stop to feed. Close by are elephants, Fishan, Tokwe, Bubi and her son, Zindoga.

The carers meet up with Lundi, as the female munches away on the bushes around her on this overcast morning. Tokwe typically takes a big branch walking with her — she knows her strength and often happily marches across the reserve paths with large bushes as snacks in her mouth, as she uses her trunk to assist her.

The bigger bulls tend to wander further away from the cows in the herd, happy to roam alone, while our carers keep an eye from a distance.
