MIND SHIFT 1 - TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Just as life itself, the 1000-mile run has a beginning and an end. And along that journey, I will have to take responsibility. I will have to take responsibility for each decision and action that I take.
Blaming others is the easy way out, and taking that won’t help me grow or become better.

MIND SHIFT 2 - SET BIG GOALS. THEN GO BIGGER

The 1000-mile run is a goal. A big goal. It is so important to have goals in life. But hardly anyone has them and even if they do, they don’t really act on them. Goals provide focus. The shape of our dreams. They give us the ability to move in on the exact actions we need to take to achieve everything we want in life.

Find your purpose. We largely go through life on autopilot. From one stage of life to the next. Make it your mission to find the thing that fills you with single-minded commitment, and you’ll truly want to push yourself as far as you can go.

MIND SHIFT 3 - ONE STEP AT A TIME

Just as in life, the 1000-mile run forces me to take one step at a time and ignore the end once the goal is set. A 1000-mile run is a collection of steps. An old Chinese proverb says, “The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step” - the courage to take that first step towards a goal.

MIND SHIFT 4 - CONSISTENCY

In order to achieve anything you want in life, which for me right now is the 1000-mile run, you must be consistent. There is no shortcut.

Whatever it is you’re bold enough to dream, if you’re intentional and deliberate about it, and do a little every single day, you’re going to wake up one day and your dreams are going to be a reality. The shortcut is a lie.

MIND SHIFT 5 - GET COMFORTABLE WITH PAIN

On the 1000-mile run, and in life in general, I have to get comfortable with the pain I will inevitably experience. In your life and certainly in mine, you will experience pain, loss, failure, hard work, effort, trials, and tribulations - it will happen! And if you have a goal and want it badly enough, the road to success will be paved with pain. Get comfortable with it, expect it - it will come.

MIND SHIFT 6 – GRIT, IT’S A ROLLERCOASTER

Life is a rollercoaster. It’s not linear. It has peaks and it has troughs. Up until now, you’ve only seen my peaks and you didn’t know that there had been troughs. By documenting the run with daily podcasts, YouTube vlogs and live social media updates, you will watch my journey, this metaphor for life, and see all the peaks and troughs. Beginning to end, exactly the same as life.

MIND SHIFT 7 - THERE’S NO PRACTICE RUN

Prior to the 1000-mile run, I will obviously be training, however I will not do a 1000-mile practice run to prepare. That would be crazy. Just like in life, there is no practice run, you don’t get a second chance - so look on the bright side, stand back up after every hardship, never stop evolving, be the best version of yourself that you can be NOW. Adapt to change, expect the inevitability of change, and believe in yourself. This is a key force, even if the odds are stacked against you.

THE SECRET FORCE: LOVE

And here’s the secret force: love. Love can make you do anything. For my run and in life, love is the secret force, because great things can be accomplished with this universal currency.
