CBD is one of over 60 compounds found in cannabis that belong to a class of ingredients called cannabinoids. Until recently, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) was getting most of the attention because it’s the ingredient in cannabis that produces mind-altering effects in users, but CBD is also present in high concentrations — and the medical world is realizing that its list of medical benefits continues to grow.

Is CBD marijuana?
Cannabis plant
CBD oil is a cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant.
Until recently, the most well-known compound in cannabis was delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the most active ingredient in marijuana.

Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, but the compounds have different effects.

THC is well-known for the mind-altering "high" it produces when broken down by heat and introduced into the body, such as when smoking the plant or cooking it into foods.

Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. However, it does appear to produce significant changes in the body and has been found to have medical benefits.

Most of the CBD used medicinally is found in the least processed form of the cannabis plant, known as hemp.

Hemp and marijuana come from the same plant, cannabis sativa, but they are very different.

Over the years, marijuana farmers have selectively bred their plants to be very high in THC and other compounds that interested them, either for a smell or an effect they had on the plant's flowers.

On the other hand, hemp farmers have not tended to modify the plant. It is these hemp plants that are used to create CBD oil.

How CBD works
All cannabinoids, including CBD, attach themselves to certain receptors in the body to produce their effects.

The human body produces certain cannabinoids on its own. It has two receptors for cannabinoids, called CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors are found all around the body, but many of them are in the brain.

The CB1 receptors in the brain deal with coordination and movement, pain, emotions and mood, thinking, appetite, and memories, among others. THC attaches to these receptors.

CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain.

It used to be thought that CBD acts on these CB2 receptors, but it appears now that CBD does not act on either receptor directly. Instead, it seems to influence the body to use more of its own cannabinoids.

But when people are SO inflamed we need to stack the odds in their favour with anti inflammatory supplements and thats where CBD comes in…

it’s even more powerful than many of the commonly recommend natural remedies for inflammation, such as curcumin, fish oil, resveratrol, anti-oxidants, proteolytic enzymes and Vitamin C

CBD literally binds to specific CBD receptors which can be thought of as a docking station solely for CBD that are on the surface of your cells. A signal is then sent from the surface of the cell, right into the nucleus of the cell where proteins are being made… and what proteins are being made? Well, CBD modulates or regulates the transcription of over 1100 genes that make signalling molecules that naturally reduce inflammation in our central nervous system and throughout the immune system…THIS then restores balance or homeostasis as we call it to both our immune and central nervous system.

So CBD up-regulates the genes that create anti-inflammatory bio chemicals and down- regulates inflammatory bio chemicals to bring balance to our immune systemCBD up regulates something called the GABA system and down regulates the glutamate system in our central nervous system which brings calmness to our central nervous system.

This then creates a cascade that runs through all the points of balance in our systems and brings the body back to its original state of balance across ALL points.

When you introduce CBD to our amazingly complex physiology, in the immune system to name just one system, the cascade of balance trickles down through all 350 signalling elements…The bottom line is that CBD causes a cascade of homeostasis or balance through our entire central nervous system and our entire immune system.

And this is happening because of what I mentioned earlier…we have receptors in our physiology for CBD called the end-cannabinoid system which was only discovered in 1992. In fact there are more receptors in our body for CBD than ANY other kind of receptor. So it’s truly the largest network of its kind throughout our entire physiology.
