Brittney Griner, a longtime star of the Phoenix Mercury, was taken into custody in February in Moscow. Authorities there claim she had cannabis cartridges (or something similar) at the airport. Any kind of marijuana is banned in Russia.
The maximum sentence is 10 years, if she's convicted.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to try to set her free, but it's all being done behind-the-scenes. It's unclear where she's being held, and when she was arrested. Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who represents Griner's home district in Houston, says Griner was taken into custody in early-to-mid February, before Russia invaded Ukraine.
