Visit Spain in Spring: Madrid, Cordoba, Toledo, Malaga, and More

While Northern Spain is beautiful, with so much to see, I’d recommend starting a springtime visit in Barcelona or Madrid. The climate is more mild and enjoyable in March, April, and May.

You’re likely to still see people walking around in heavier coats in February, March, and even April, but with highs in the 50s and 60s, it’s good weather for exploring the cities.

Madrid is bustling in the spring. The landmarks, Plaza Mayor, and shopping boulevards are full of tourists and locals.
The city’s many rooftop restaurants are a bit chilly at night, but they’ll have heaters to keep you warm.

Spring is a great time to get out of the city, and use Spain’s excellent train system to check out other cities and towns without the big tourist crowds that arrive each summer.

Toledo is less than an hour by train from Madrid.
There’s a lot to explore, from the city’s 14th Century Bridge and paths along the river, to the Toledo Cathedral, to the shops and restaurants along the pedestrian-friendly streets.

A little more than an hour from Madrid is Cuenca, famous for its “Hanging Houses,” which are homes built centuries ago on rock cliffs.

Two hours by train from Madrid is Cordoba.
The Mosque-Cathedral (Mezquita-Catedral) is another UNESCO site to explore in this part of Spain.
Cordoba is also home to other palaces and fortresses, and is known for beautiful courtyards and gardens.

Three hours by train is the Mediterranean Sea, and cities like Malaga.
Spring temperatures along the coast are great for shopping and dining outside, though there might be a chilly breeze if you’re right on the water.
In the spring, orange blossoms are in bloom, creating a sweet smell as you hike up to the historic fortress on the hill.
