Guide to Hiking to Humantay Lake in Peru
Humantay Lake is a pristine, turquoise-colored glacial lake in the mountains of the Cusco region of Peru. It’s one of the best day trip options from the city of Cusco.
You can take a tour bus here, or hire your own driver.
For a full guide and many photos of the trail and what to expect on a hike, check out:

The first half of the trail is flat, and you’ll pass a few glamping options along the way.
The second half is where things get tough.
You’ll be hiking to an elevation of 14,000 feet above sea level, so most people, no matter how in shape they are, will be out-of-breath and needing to take breaks along the way.

You can hire horses to take you up to the lake. They have plenty on standby at the base of the mountain, which you can pay for on-site.
You’ll likely find a crowd right where the trail drops you off at the lake. Most people don’t venture beyond this point, but the trail continues around the side of the lake.
It’s well worth it to leave the crowd behind and find other spots to take photos or just relax.
There’s no swimming at Humantay Lake. There are no drones allowed, and there’s no cell service in the area.
You will find little shops and a cafe at the trailhead to buy water and snacks. There’s even a series of bathrooms to stop at.
The nearest town is Mollepata, which is still an hour’s drive away. But you’ll find the Pincopata Ecocamp there, complete with eco-friendly domes and a great restaurant on site.
