The Bus to Machu Picchu: No Longer as Terrifying!
You have to take a bus to Machu Picchu. There are no cars and no taxis.
The other option is to hike from nearby Ollantaytambo.
You should try to buy your bus ticket in Aguas Calientes (or Machu Picchu Pueblo) the day before. They’re $20 for a roundtrip, or $12 for a one-way up.

The line of people waiting for the bus in Aguas Calientes each morning is lengthy. And though it may seem a bit chaotic, it’s actually a well-organized system that gets 2,500 tourists a day up to Machu Picchu.

You’ll take a bus an hour before your timed entry to Machu Picchu.
If your Machu Picchu entry is for 10:00am, you’ll line up for the bus at 9:00am.
You can find tour guides to hire here in line, or at the entrance to Machu Picchu.
The bus ride is about 20 to 25 minutes up the mountain to Machu Picchu.
I remember drivers taking the hairpin turns at high speeds, barely missing oncoming buses and getting way too close to the cliff’s edge.
Now, the buses have speeds posted inside, and the drivers don’t go over 30 kilometers per hour.
After exploring Machu Picchu, if the weather’s nice, I’d suggest hiking back down to town. It’ll take an hour or two, down a well-marked set of stone steps.
I’d suggest spending two nights in town, one on either side of your visit to Machu Picchu.
It’s a charming, pedestrian-friendly little village, full of restaurants and shops.
