A Guide to the Acropolis Summer: Survive the Heat & Crowds!

While people complain about the crowds at the Acropolis in the summer, the truth is: it’s crowded here year-round.
The Greek government cut the number daily visitors to 20,000, which some say is still too many.
It adds up to around 7-million tourists a year visiting the ancient ruins.

To avoid having to wait in this ticket line at the base of the Acropolis, I’d buy your tickets ahead of time. They’re sold for different timed entries.
In the summer, I’d go for the earliest possible, just to avoid the heat of the midday and afternoon sun.
Plus, on days when temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius, or about 105 degrees Fahrenheit, they close the Acropolis altogether.

There’s very little shade here, so groups will crowd under the few trees for some relief from the sun, or drink from the fountain nearby. They have staff in huts, monitoring the crowd for any heat-related illnesses.

After exploring the ruins, and seeing all of the preservation work underway, there’s an Acropolis Museum down below, where you can learn even more in the comfort of air conditioning.
