10 Simple Money Saving Hacks For 2020

10 simple money saving hacks for 2020

If you're looking to save money and get out of debt this year, I have 20 of the most powerful and practical tips and hacks to help you do so. This is part 1. Stay tuned for part 2!

These are all things I currently do to help myself and encourage clients to do to take their finances to the next level.

Walk. Enjoy walking places. It’s great exercise, therapeutic, and free. I notice the days I don’t get a few miles of walking in. I feel restless if I don’t get a few miles in. It’s a great opportunity for #2.

Use downtime to learn. Walking the dog, driving to work, and doing laundry are all opportunities to absorb audiobooks and podcasts. Since my 2015 New Years’ Resolution to listen to 1 personal growth, finance, or productivity podcast per day, I have absorbed 1500+ podcast episodes of the best and brightest information which has dramatically improved my quality of life. Using your downtime more effectively will help you produce more at work, earn more money, and improve your mindset to enjoy your life more despite your circumstances.

Eat healthy but also affordably. Organic oatmeal is dirt cheap and healthy. So are organic bananas, rice, beans, lentil pasta, and frozen veggies. I spend roughly $60 per week on my groceries at Trader Joe’s and eat primarily organic food. You don’t need to eat wild caught salmon 3x per week or drink kombucha daily when looking to cut back.

Share rides when possible. This applies to coworkers, friends and family as well as using apps like Uber. Offer gas money when riding with others or accept it in return. Besides gas costs, it will save on maintenance and parking fees. Plus, you get some quality conversation time with your loved ones or may meet a new friend on an Uber ride.

Make 1 super healthy smoothie per day. My first meal is my super green smoothie. It would cost $25 if I ordered it at a West Hollywood smoothie bar, but it costs me roughly $3 and I take it with me in my 42oz Thermos. It’s loaded with plant based protein, greens, ginger, lemon, banana, and all sorts of goodness. Besides serving as a filling lunch, my daily smoothie is also my multivitamin and the main reason I never get sick.

Go bananas. They’re healthy and by far the cheapest and most versatile fruit. I was spending $80 per month on non-organic berries for my smoothies. Then, after deciding I wanted to buy organic berries, I was on pace to be spending $120 per month. F that. $120 is more than double my cell phone bill. Since switching to bananas, I spend just $10 per month to get 40 organic bananas for my smoothies and to snack on.

Quit the booze. When eating out, alcohol is the main money maker for restaurants. It’s way overpriced and just leads to questionable decisions and worse health. If quitting sounds too extreme, just cut down. The same applies to cigarettes.

Audit your subscriptions. Go through all the $4-$50 per month memberships and subscriptions and memberships you have hiding within your credit card statement. If it’s not a must-have, cancel them. If you’re unsure, cancel them. You can always get them back.
Trust me, they make the process of signing up extremely seamless.

Consider getting a bicycle. Besides my Vespa, a bicycle is one of my top LA hacks. It’s fun, gives me a workout, and gets me places. Investing $500 in a quality hybrid bicycle like my Giant Escape 2 has saved me hundreds in gas and parking fees plus allowed me to tap into my inner child.

Don’t pay for WiFi on planes. Why does this come to mind? Because I’m typing this right now without internet. Unless you have work to do that must be done with internet connection, use the 2–6 hours to read, write, meditate, listen to podcasts, or relax using the airline’s included in-flight entertainment.
