How to Enjoy Life to the Fullest While on a Budget

Daily meditation. “Oh God, if I hear “meditation” one more time!” There’s a reason the 3000+ year old practice is now hotter than ever. It works. It’s the cure for most stress, anxiety, and insecurity. To me, my 7 minute morning meditation is a gentle daily reminder that all the stuff I worry so much about is pretty much petty and meaningless. Even if it’s a big deal, it’s a smaller deal when I come to the realization that I am an infinite spirit housed in a temporary flesh suit. There are dozens of types of meditation and several apps like Calm and Headspace to help the mentally overwhelmed like myself.

Journal. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t journal nearly as much as I should, but when I do, I find it very therapeutic and relieving. It’s like all the endless thoughts and emotions swirling inside me, robbing me of my creative energy finally have a home so I can move on. There’s a reason why Davinci, Edison, Einstein, and Darwin had daily journals. Sure there was no Medium.com yet, but still, it can’t hurt to release your thoughts and feelings in a physical form. The habit of journaling can really add some peace and sanity to your life with only 5–10 minutes of time and a $2 notepad.

Enjoy nature more. We’re humans. We belong in nature. We physically and psychologically crave natural air and sun. Maybe camping isn’t your thing, but a simple walk at your nearest park can bring a sense of connectivity to the planet and yourself. While you’re there, take your shoes off and feel the earth. This simple practice, known as grounding, has been reported to reduce anxiety, depression, and fatigue. While the science is not highly researched, at the worst, it’ll take you back to when you were a kid running through your backyard without a care in the world. Just avoid ant piles!

Replace a night out at the bar with a free class. Drinking alcohol at bars and restaurants can be insanely expensive with a very limited list of pros and a much longer list of cons. If you drink more that on a rare occasion, consider being more creative with you nights and weekends. We all need novelty in our life and one easy way to get it is to try a new class or experience. Websites like Eventbrite and Groupon offer a variety of things to do that you would had never thought of for under $40. On Eventbrite, many of the events are free!
Learn intentionally everyday. Remember when you were a kid and you were so excited to tell your parents about what crazy thing you learned in school? Where did that excitement go? Trust me, I hate calculus too, but there are a ton of fascinating things to learn about and deciding to learn a bit everyday about something that interests you will renew that zest for life. It can be anything from astronomy and astrology to human anthropology and ancient Greek philosophy. Just read 10 pages per day, or listen to a podcast, or turn on a Netflix documentary to rediscover how incredible life really is.
