A late January winter storm brought numerous impacts to the North Carolina Outer Banks on Thursday. Strong winds and big waves led to beach erosion along the Outer Banks. Temperatures fell cold enough for snow this morning and snow fell in most towns, although little if any stuck in the southern communities, with up to a dusting in the central OBX, while around a half-inch was observed in the northern areas. Portions of North Carolina Highway 12, near the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, was covered in sand due to strong winds blowing it off the dunes. Crews were steady working throughout the day to keep the roadway clear in order to keep it open for traffic.
