Fossil Proteins and the Mysteries of Evolution

An international research team that includes the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence, hits a turning point in the field of molecular paleontology, thanks to the study of fossil proteins. In the work published in Nature, led by the University of Copenhagen, the sequencing of the dental enamel of a Pleistocene rhino - whose remains have been found in Dmanisi, Georgia - has allowed the scientists to reconstruct the evolutionary lines of the extinct mammal, tracing back genetic information so far impossible to obtain using the sequencing techniques of ancient DNA.
