Part 2 Chapter 3 Summary

Alright! Part 2, chapter 3, note below:
When they wake up from a nap, Julia says how they have to get back home (they can’t use the same route twice) and decide to meet again in four days. Over the next couple weeks, because their schedules are so busy, they meet only a couple times in the streets, and only once to make love. During one of their meetings in the streets he is able to kiss her because a rocket goes off and they are both thrown, he thinks she is dead so he kisses her.
They are finally able to meet up in a bombed out church and they talk and make love. Julia tells Winston that she lives in a hostel with thirty other girls, and that her first sexual encounter was at 16 with a party member who was 60, but he killed himself so nobody ever found out her name. She mentions that she doesn’t want open rebellion, she just wants to live and to be able to do what she wants.
Julia also tells Winston about why the party wants to control sex. Saying that, if you let people enjoy it, then they won’t have the energy to work for the Party. So in order to get all that pent up energy, you have to take away that satisfaction.
Winston then tells her about his wife Katherine, about how they took a hiking trip and how he almost pushed her off a cliff. He realized they were alone, and nobody would have known. He says he’s sorry he didn’t push her, but then he says it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because no matter what he did the party will always win. Just like now with he and Julia, eventually they will be caught and killed.
Julia asks if he’s rather be alive with her, or dead and they begin to make plans for their next meeting back in the wooded clearing.
