The Stranger Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary

Here's chapter 3!!!!
Part 1, Chapter 3
Meursault has a lot of work at the office and his boss asks how old his mother was. She was about 60. He gets through his invoices and goes to lunch with Emmanuel by hitchhiking a ride on the back of a truck. They go to Céleste’s and Meursault drinks too much wine and goes home to sleep. He then goes back to work and finishes his day then goes home to make potatoes.
On his way upstairs, he sees Salamano, his neighbor across the hall. Salamano has an old dog that has mange. They’ve lived together alone for so long they look like each other. Salamano takes his dog on a walk twice a day. Salamano has never changed his route in 8 years. The dog pulls the man until he trips, then he beats and swears at the dog; he then pulls the dog, the dog forgets, starts pulling again, and the whole thing starts over.
When Meursault meets Salamano, he’s swearing at the dog with “filthy, stinking bastard!” Meursault asks what the dog did and Salamano says “filthy stinking bastard” again. Meursault asks louder and Salamano responds “He’s always there.” Salamano then goes inside.
At that point another neighbor comes in, Raymond. Word around town is that he’s a pimp, but he tells everyone he works as a warehouse guard. He’s a bit short, has a nose like a boxer, and not very popular, but Meursault talks to him. Raymond invites Meursault over for some wine and sausage. Raymond’s apartment is messy, and he has a bandage around his hand he got from getting in a fight with “some guy.” Raymond says he’s not a bad guy, he just has a short fuse. The fight started because someone called him out while he was on a streetcar.
Raymond says he wants Meursault’s advise on something because Meursault is a man, and that they could be pals. Meursault says sure and Raymond starts cooking the sausage. When the food is ready, they eat with wine but in silence. When they finish, Raymond starts talking. It turns out he has a mistress and the guy he got in a fight with is her brother.
Raymond says that he realized she was cheating on him. He would give her just enough money to live on, to pay her rent and food, but she always said she couldn’t make ends meet even though she’d buy her friends coffee. As Raymond says it, she didn’t even want to work half days. One day, Raymond found a lottery ticket in her purse and didn’t know how she could have paid for it. He also found a pawn ticket where she pawned two bracelets, bracelets which Raymond didn’t even know she had. Raymond wound up leaving her, but not until he beat her.
He beat her until she bled. He says he never hit her before except here and there, but this time it was for real. He then says she doesn’t know what she has coming. By this time Meursault has drunken a liter of wine to himself. The problem is, Raymond is still attracted to her. He wants to get revenge, but isn’t sure how. He thought about taking her to a hotel then calling the vice squad; then, he contacted some underworld friends who were going to “mark” her but he didn’t want that to happen. He wants to know what Meursault thinks of the whole thing. Meursault says he understands why he wants to punish her, and when asks about it Meursault also says that it does seem like she was cheating.
They have some more wine and Raymond tells Meursault what he’s thinking of doing. He’s going to write her a letter to get her to come back to him. Then when she comes back and they are in bed, he’s going to wait until the very last moment and then spit in her face and kick her out. Meursault says how this would work. Raymond then says he doesn’t think he can write a letter that good, so he asks Meursault and Meursault doesn’t mind.
Meursault writes the letter for Raymond and Raymond likes it. Meursault realizes the girl is Moorish (Arab) through her name. Raymond stops calling him Monsieur and only calls him Meursault, saying that they are now pals. They finish the wine and smoke. Then Meursault says it’s late. Reymond tells Meursault not to let things get to him, that he heard that his mother died and that it was bound to happen sooner or later. Meursault agrees.
Meursault goes back to his room; he can feel the blood in his ears; and, as he goes to bed, he can hear Salamano’s dog whimpering quietly next door.
