Museum Island Berlin

Friedrich Wilhelm III. gave the order to create a Museum. It opened in 1830 and is one of the oldest museums in Germany. Subsequent kings extended the art collection continuously which led to a shortage of space in the Lustgarten. And so, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV., who was passionate about architecture, developed the idea of a great museum complex together with the architect Friedrich August Stüler in 1841. Inspired by the Acropolis of Athens, temple-like buildings, colonnades and gardens would have come into being behind the Old Museum. This was the birth of Berlin’s Museum Island. Stüler developed two magnificent temples of the muses which became the New Museum, which opened in 1859, and the Old National Gallery which was inaugurated in 1876. Up to the year 1904, the architect Ernst von Ihne followed with the Bode Museum and the former director of urban planning and construction Ludwig Hoffmann accomplished the work of the century with the Pergamon Museum in 1930. So here you can find a unique ensemble of five museums having a reputation as a UNESCO-World Heritage Site.
