Various competing claims exist as to whowas responsible for the world's first trafficsignal. A device installed in London in1868 featured two semaphore arms thatextended horizontally to signal “stop" and ata 45-degree angle to signal “caution.” In 1912,a Salt Lake City,Utah,a police officer namedLester Wire mounted a handmade woodenbox with coloured red and green lights ona pole,with the wires attached to overheadtrolley and light wires. Most prominently,theinventor Garrett Morgan has been given creditfor having invented the traffic signal basedon his T-shaped design,patented in 1923 andlater reportedly sold to General Electric.
Despite Morgan's greater visibility, the systemInstalled in Cleveland on August 5,1914, iswidely regarded as the first electric trafficsignal.Based on a design by James Hoge,who received U.S. patent 1,251,666 for his"Municipal Traffic Control System” in 1918,it consisted of four pairs of red and greenlights that served as stop-go indicators,each mounted on a corner post.Wired to amanually operated switch inside a controlbooth,the system was configured so thatconflicting signals were impossible, Accordingto an article in The Motorist, published bythe Cleveland Automobile Club in Augusi1914: "This system is, perhaps, destinedto revolutionize the handling of traffic incongested city streets and should be seriouslyconsidered by traffic committees for general adoption
