The letter was written in 1924 from his jailcell at Landsberg Fortress prison,wherehe was imprisoned that year for his role inthe "Bierkeller Putsch" when his nascentNazi party tried and failed to seize power inMunich.
In jail, he wrote Mein Kampf, the blueprint forpower that would make him rich. However,when he penned a letter to Jakob Ferlin,owner of a Mercedes-Benz dealership inMunich, little money was to be had.
Hitler,who one day would own a fleet ofMercedes cars, had his heart set on the11/40 model,which at the time cost 18,000Reichsmarks.He had set his heart on one ingrey with spoked wheels and white-wall tires.
"But the hardest thing for me at the momentlies in the fact that the biggest payment formy work is not expected until the middle ofDecember," he wrote in September 1924 toHerr Ferlin.
"So I am compelled to ask for a loan or anadvance. Naturally, something in the order ofseveral thousand marks would be a big help."The letter also voiced concern about thevehicle's engine; "That is the only thing aboutthe 11/40 that makes me cautious. I can't afforda vehicle every two or three years or pay forexpensive repairs either." Hitler was freedfrom his five-year jail sentence in December
