No arrests yet in Morvant massacre — police pursue persons of interest as probe intensifies

Police have made no arrests in connection with Sunday’s deadly quadruple murder along Lady Young Road, Morvant, as investigators continue to pursue several persons of interest.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro, speaking during a media briefing on Monday, said officers have significantly intensified their efforts as they work to bring answers—and some measure of closure—to grieving relatives.

Guevarro also expressed condolences to the families of the victims, among them a young child, describing the killings as deeply tragic and troubling.

The brazen attack unfolded around 7:50 p.m. on April 19, when gunmen launched a coordinated ambush on a red Mitsubishi Lancer travelling along Lady Young Road near the Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Four occupants of the vehicle were killed in the hail of gunfire: 23-year-old Obataiye Okerian Latiff of Don Miguel Road, San Juan; 20-year-old Chelsea Edwards of Belmont; Asim Armstrong of Belmont; and nine-year-old J’Layna Armstrong of San Juan.

Investigators believe the victims were ambushed while driving, after another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire. The driver reportedly lost control during the assault, crashing into another vehicle before coming to a stop across the roadway.

A fifth victim, 23-year-old Cornelius Smart, was shot twice in the back but managed to survive. He was rushed to hospital by relatives and remains in stable condition.

Crime scene investigators recovered a total of 45 spent shells—30 from high-powered 5.56 rifles and 15 from 9mm firearms—highlighting the sheer intensity of the attack.

Preliminary reports suggest the victims had been liming at a family gathering in central Trinidad earlier that evening and were on their way home when they were targeted.

Police are currently exploring the possibility that the killings are gang-related, though officials stress that investigations remain ongoing.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to piece together the events behind one of the most chilling attacks in recent weeks.— Story by I.A.N News
