EVGA X58 Classified & 7.2GHz 980X - Cold Bug Tests & Conclusion

Finally I got to test the 7.2GHz on the EVGA X58 Classified motherboards. Sadly the end result was not what I hoped for. The overall combination is very buggy, the CPU is far from easy to get to full pot, and even if you manage to hit max temperature, the whole IMC/memory configuration is very unstable.

In the end I ended up testing both the E770 and E760 on ln2. First I thought the E770 had some issue at the PLL voltage rail, but it ended up being the built-in extreme cooling modes that secretly locked PLL voltage to low levels. If you have a CPU that likes very high PLL voltage you should leave all of those options disabled and not to touch the XCOOL jumper.

I managed to hit full pot a few times, but the end result was quite unsatisfying. The whole rig was so unstable and clock speeds far behind the main competitor boards on LN2. Even when just running single stick of memory the Classified was behind on Wprime for example at higher vcore compared to X58A-OC. Also the lack of proper reset made the whole experience with the boards very annoying. When you hit reset it doesn't reset the board like normally, yet instead it will just shut down the system after a few seconds and then tries to power back on. This means that on LN2 you will always hit cold boot bug (CBB) and you end up wasting a lot of LN2.

Overall I don't recommend the Classified over Rampage III or X58A-OC for Gulftown based on these results. Last thing I can try is to mod the Rampage III Black Edition for higher PLL voltage but that is pretty much it. On air or water the X58 Classified boards are definitely alright.
