Why is the $41 Million Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) So Important to the US Navy

Future US amphibious combat capabilities have mostly been discussed in relation to ships, planes, helicopters, and vehicles. The Navy is developing and building the future LX class of advanced amphibious warships, such as the LPD-17 class (R). With the deployment of the first squadron of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's short takeoff, vertical landing variant, the Marine Corps' flight capacity increased significantly. The Navy's LHA and LHD amphibious assault ships, which have flight decks, are deploying the F-35B. Among the rotary-wing aircraft in which the Marine Corps is investing heavily are the MV-22 Osprey, AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y Venom, and the brand-new CH-53K King Stallion heavy lift helicopter. Finally, the Marine Corps' program for amphibious combat vehicles will offer a brand-new fighting platform that can ultimately move independently from ships at sea to land.
