Music of Courtesans: Ode to Chanda Bai
Date: Wednesday 24th May 2023
Venue: Seven Arts
South Asian Arts-uk and Kalakar Arts invite you to join us as we take you on a journey to the Indian city of Hyderabad, dressed in the effervescent glow of the 18th century. The air is hot and stifled, but all at once it dances with the alluring melodies of an enchantress. It flows from the court of spell-bound noblemen surrendering their hearts to perhaps India’s most greatly revered and breathtaking courtesan, Chanda Bai.
All at once a poetess, delicate performer, fearsome warrior, and lover alike, Chanda’s exhilarating life has never been truly translated in history. But here to restore the kaleidoscope of colour to her legacy is Chandra Chakraborty who took on the role of Queen of the underworld in the sensationally celebrated production Orpheus.
In this spectacular tale of love, tragedy, and betrayal told through the power of song and poetry in this musical theatre performance, you are promised an exhilarating evening with thrill and adventure at every turn.
