Mãe Sereia - Kathak and Brazilian Folk Dance

Canadian born Kiran Phull is an up and coming dancer who delights audiences with both classical and contemporary Kathak pieces.

This piece is called Mae Sereia, which means ''mother mermaid''. Kiran dances to the tune of this Brazilian folk song which expresses the veneration to the goddess and queen of the seas, Yemanjá. The choreography of this dance makes it seem as if Kiran were adrift at the sea. The performance perfectly expresses the qualities of Yemanjá as patron saint of fishermen and survivors of shipwrecks.
