Building Incredible Core Strength Requires These 3 Critical Factors
This is another video in our series on core strength and core stability and this discusses a very important message.
And that is - "strength is not of importance to core stabilizers, timing is."
I have used the trap bar deadlift to explain this concept as it is easy to see the loss of positioning and alignment when using a comparison video. We regularly see excessive "gripping" of the glutes and the upper back muscles in this exercise which in both cases ruins the alignment and integrity of the joints and completely negates any use of the core. It won't matter how strong your abs are with a plank your body will be exposed to all sorts of problems if you use these strategies in this movement.
I encourage you to read the detailed articles about gripping and hip mechanics in the links below if you are not 100% sure what this means.

I could have any type of exercise in this video and even the deadlift itself has several versions. The deadlift is an excellent exercise for improving strength, posture and core control, but........ only if it is performed correctly. If you adopt poor movement and weird gripping strategies it is just a matter of time until you experience pain.

The current thinking with most trainers is to add strength to everything because when muscles are strong, they should work well. However, this is a dangerous assumption to make for when it comes to core stability and fluid movement, strength is not of great importance to the body. Being strong doesn’t guarantee good stability or movement.
Many people think if we have a strong core using exercises like planks and crunches everything will be fine. We have been taught to treat the core stabiliser muscles in the same we would use a bicep curl to make our arm stronger. Unfortunately, the stabiliser muscles do not respond to this type of training and are not programmed to functions in this manner. Instead, they rely more on TIMING and SEQUENCING and are highly dependent on the MOTOR PROGRAM used by the brain for each movement we make.
And for the person who spends time doing heaps of abdominal work to prevent back pain or as an injury prevention method they misunderstand the true function of the core. We must realise that strength of the abdominal muscles WILL NOT change the faulty movement that leads to injury and pain. Your body will instantly sacrifice any strength if it only knows how to move with the same dysfunctional movement it has always used. You must identify and change the faulty movement patterns linked to the injury to have any chance.
