3 Joe Satriani Licks From 1988

Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Joe Satriani Licks From 1988. I've had a lot of requests to feature more of Satriani's music, and while I've put together Chordplay, Three-For-All, and Breaking Chords episodes on the LNL channel centered around Joe's playing style, I recently discovered the footage featured in this lesson and jumped at the chance to reveal more of Joe's fretboard magic - so here we go!

The ideas in this lesson came from a bootleg from Japan in 1988 when Joe was working/touring with the legendary Mick Jagger in support of Jagger's 1987 album 'Primitive Cool.' This was after Satriani had released 'Surfing With The Alien' and he found himself struggling to get his solo career off the ground when he received a call to join Jagger's band for the upcoming tour - which mainly took place in Japan and a handful of locations overseas. This tour combined with the added attention of working with Jagger's band helped Joe jumpstart his career. It's notable that just a year or so after the Jagger tour, Joe Satriani was a bonafide guitar god.

The footage in this lesson captures Joe playing a cover of Hendrix's 'Red House' with Jagger's band and contains plenty of expressive bluesy bending/vibrato phrasing, along with some slick moves on the neck and subtle variations/mutations using the minor pentatonic scale. There's something interesting/inspiring about catching a player out of their element and performing music/ideas in a fresh or interesting way - and you can find plenty of that action hiding in this lesson!
