The Chord & Scale Matchmaker
Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with The Chord & Scale Matchmaker. No, this isn't a dating game for music theory nerds, but we are taking a look at a number of relationships that exist between scales and chords, not to mention arpeggio construction, melodic note targeting over chords, building melodies/phrases that match the chords you're playing over, and much more! If these baffling areas of creating music and music theory are troubling you, this episode is for you - so let's dive in!
This lesson revolves around the general key center of E minor and investigates not only basic minor triads and minor 7th chords/arpeggios, but also includes the use of the additional notes from the key/scale, with the targeted use of the 2nd/9th, 4th/11th, and b6th/b13th in the chords we're building from the ground up. Once the additional notes are added to the chords, you'll notice that soloing and playing over the different chord types changes, as the additional notes in the chords give the same notes from the scale new meaning and emphasis, not to mention locating inspiring musical sounds/ideas to explore with the new tonalities you've created.
If matching scales over specific chord types is a tricky area for you (as it is with most players), or you'd like to review some of this material, or maybe this is entirely new ground for you as a guitarist/musician. Regardless, there's plenty hiding in this lesson to keep you busy and (hopefully) inspired!
