The Spinners ~ Rubberband Man 1976 Disco Purrfection Version
Thom Bell and Linda Creed are writers of some of the finest songs in R&B for artists like Dusty Springfield, The Stylistics and The Spinners. Examples are "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "You Are Everything" and "Rubberband Man". Thom concerned himself with the music tracks and Linda was more into the lyrics, which often left them at odds since neither would budge. But as they were great friends, in the end, they collaborated and completed the songs. Thom had a personal project of writing songs for each of his children "so they could feel part of something". Thom's oldest son, Mark, was corpulent throughout his adolescence and Thom had composed this little tune called "The Fat Man" meant to help him emotionally combat the bullies who often called Mark by that name. It soon changed to "Big Man" to be less derogatory and then it went under one more name transformation into "Rubberband Man" by the time the Spinners got a hold of it. Turning the song into the character who everyone is waiting for to get the party started, "someone who makes the party jump", a big guy who really had the moves and out-dance everyone there. The writers felt that they could talk to the big people of the world who were with it, to help break the misconception that they were slow and clumsy. Bell also came up with a novel idea, for the Spinners to use huge rubber bands to a dance he choreographed especially for "Rubberband Man". It went over so well, they were still using the same giant rubberbands for years after the song fell of the charts. It peaked at #2 for three weeks on the pop charts, unable to make the sun rise on Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night", but went all the way to #1 on the R&B charts for one week. The group seemed poised for further stardom at this point, but then lead singer Phillipe Wynne left them high and dry and it took a change of producer and a novel concept to create their next major hit, the disco classic "Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl" in 1979.
