John Parr ~ St Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion) 1985 Extended Meow Mix

The world now knows about Rick Hansen, the paraplegic athlete who organized a trek across the world in his wheelchair. Born August 26, 1957 in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Rick embraced track and field for the bodily endurance it would help build. At the age of 15, he was sitting in the bed of a pickup truck and was ejected in an accident that damaged his spinal cord and rendered him paraplegic from the waist down.

He fought back, rehabilitated himself, completed high school and entered the University Of British Columbia graduating as the first student with a disability to obtain a degree in physical education. He continued his pursuit of sports in a wheelchair becoming a world class champion and Paralympic athlete winning 19 international wheelchair marathons with three world world championships. He also coached high school sports of volleyball and basketball.

In 1980 Canadian Terry Fox, who lost a leg to cancer, began his "Marathon Of Hope" for cancer awareness with the intent to cross Canada but was stopped about halfway through when he suffered a relapse that eventually killed him. I remember that day, I was so sad.

Then in March of 1985 Rick Hansen began his Man In Motion world marathon. At first no one really cared or knew what he was doing but by the end, he passed through 34 countries on four continents raising cancer awareness and a cool 26 million dollars for spinal cord research and was hailed an international hero.

One of Rick's admirers was fellow Canadian, super producer David Foster who wrote this song about him titled it "Man in Motion" and decided that it would be a good song for the soundtrack of "St Elmo's Fire". He gave the song to English vocal talent John Parr and the results were spectacular! The song topped the charts in many countries around the world including the US and Canada. The hopeful message is uplifting and and the musical arrangement turned it into an anthem courtesy of David Foster.

John Parr was born in Worksop, England on November 18, 1952 and began his music career as a child at the age of 12. He continued to experience success moving on from group to group until 1983 when Meatloaf asked him to write some songs for his new album, Bad Attitude. He got a contract with Atlantic Records and his first single "Naughty Naughty" peaked at #23. That set the scene for him to be approached by David Foster to record the title theme of the movie "St Elmo's Fire" that was also a tribute to Rick Hansen.

On the strength of that hit, Parr then toured with Tina Turner, Heart and The Beach Boys. Parr wrote a song "Under A Raging Moon" for Roger Daltrey that paid tribute to the fallen Keith Moon and told the story of The Who. After that he collaborated with Mutt Lange, played the lead role in "Paris" a rock opera, and found that a dance remix of Man In Motion called "New Horizon" went Top 5 in 2006.

Since then he has worked and toured with Journey, Richard Marx, Bryan Adams, Guns N Roses, Jeff Beck, Mick Hucknall (Simply Red). Man In Motion was revived in 2016 when Google used the song in their Google Android cell phone campaign. He is still in demand, recording and performing.
