Rick Astley ~ Never Gonna Give You Up 1987 Disco Purrfection Version

The Rick Astley started on February 6, 1966 in a small town just outside of Liverpool. Soon young Rick was listening to his mother play the piano for him. He gravitated towards singing and joined a church choir in Manchester.

The next thing you know, he is selling his biking leather (jacket) to buy a drum set. He supported himself by playing Beatles covers in pubs around town with his band called FBI.

Learning to write music, he also sang the songs. It was around this point that they met up with Pete Waterman who had just put together a production team with Mike Stock and Matt Aitken. Waterman took Astley aside and told him that he was interested only in Rick and not the band.

A few months later, Astley took Waterman up on his offer and accepted a job as a tape operator in the studio. Its an entry level job, but it puts you right next to the people who are creating the sound. That way you learn a lot about music production. He also made a lot of tea as the Tape Op was usually the whipping boy for any errands needed to run the studio sessions smoothly.

His first session in the studio was an uncredited vocal on O'chi Brown's "Learning To Live (Without Your Love)" on 1986. That fall, he recorded "Never Gonna Give You Up" a song and it was released in the UK where it hit #1 for five weeks! It quickly crossed over the world and hit #1 in the US the week of March 12, 1988 and stayed there for two weeks.
