Someone tell Mr. Mike this isn't an ab exercise

The problem with hanging leg raises is that most people do them by just flinging their legs up and down which turns it into a hip flexor exercise instead of an ab exercise.

To actually hit your abs you need to target their function of spinal flexion, meaning curling your pelvis toward your sternum.

And it does look like Mike's getting some of that pelvic tilt in there, so I don't think he's butchering it like this clip makes it seem.

To make this an even better ab exercises though, use these two tweaks. First, setup a bar behind you to brace against so your torso stays locked in and you’re not swinging back and forth, and second, use lifting straps so you don't have to divert focus onto holding your body weight for the entire set.

Or you can skip those issues entirely by using a captain's chair, doing garhammers on a decline bench, or basic reverse crunches if you're still a novice.

For the best ab stimulus though, just go with a pure crunching movement since that allows you to hammer your abs with spinal flexion only and no extra limitations.
